Biman to hire foreign companies for Boeing 777 maintenance

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is going to hire foreign company soon for the maintenance of its new-generation Boeing 777 aircraft as its own engineering department is not equipped for doing such a huge job.

Disclosing such a plan of Biman, a high official of the engineering department told banglanews that Biman authority would soon float a tender for ensuring overseas assistance before the arrival of the Boeing and now the management is “busy preparing tender specifications”.

According to the deal signed with US-based Boeing Company, B-777 aircraft will be added to the Biman fleet in October next. Before that Biman engineering department will have to take the responsibilities for the maintenance of Boeing 777. That’s why Biman is now looking for foreign company to offer the maintenance job of the up-and-coming wide-bodied airplanes.

Talking to banglanews, a Biman engineer, on condition of anonymity, said, “If Biman goes for hiring any foreign company just for maintaining the aircraft to be added to the fleet of the national flag carrier in October, a huge amount of foreign currency would go abroad.”

He added: “It’s very unfortunate for us as we are quite unable to take the full maintenance of the Boeing due to the authority’s negligence.’’

Under the deal, Boeing will take all the necessary steps to arrange training for the engineers and a group of engineers have already been to Seattle, the headquarters of Boeing Company, for training purpose.

“But, If the Biman authority could send the engineer in time, we should not face any such trouble in maintaining the aircraft,’ sources said.

As contacted, Debobrato Banik, Chief Engineer of Biman, told banglanews that technical assistance from overseas companies is nothing new for Biman, rather it would be more useful for the national flag carrier, as “we didn’t have enough experience to tackle the new-generation aircraft.”

Earlier, the national airlines got technical assistance from Boeing Shanghai for Boeing 737 lease aircraft. An eight-member engineering team of Shanghai had worked for Biman in Dhaka. They left Dhaka for China last month as Biman is now capable of dealing with Boeing 737.
